Structure:
Training in clinical transfusion medicine will take place at UCSF Health hospitals (Moffitt-Long Hospital, Mission Bay Hospital, and Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital).
Duration: 6 months

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:
- Develop a thorough knowledge of blood collection, preparation, storage, and shipment
- Explain indications for transfusion and appropriate blood product selection
- Describe pre-transfusion testing
- Demonstrate proficiency in managing transfusion-related complications
- Integrate knowledge of immunologic and genetic principles that underlie transfusion medicine
- Explain the role of transfusion medicine in managing specific acute and chronic diseases
- Describe complications of blood transfusion, including infectious and non-infectious risks
- Demonstrate knowledge of immunohematology and interpretation of immunohematology tests
- Develop effective writing skills by writing consult notes and transfusion reaction notes
- Communicate effectively in the role of first call consultant to clinicians and residents with questions or problems
- Serve as a helpful resource for technologists and clinicians regarding transfusion medicine/blood bank issues
- Assist in teaching rotating residents and medical students the principles and practices of the transfusion service
- Develop an understanding of quality assurance in blood banking/transfusion medicine
- Explain the role of the blood supplier in relationship to the hospital transfusion service
- Assess cost-effective medical practice regarding indications for transfusion and selection of appropriate blood products
- Describe regulatory agencies rules governing collection, processing, and distribution of blood products and CAP and AABB accreditation requirements
- Demonstrate knowledge of emerging pathogens and their potential impact on national blood supply
- Identify and assimilate pertinent evidence from scientific studies to develop an evidence-based approach to patient care
- Apply case-based learning as a tool for additional insight into the basis of disease
- Demonstrate effective problem-solving skills in transfusion medicine using a variety of information resources
Additional Responsibilities
- Supervise residents and medical students on rounds and during call (taking second call with supervision of an attending as third call).
- Create a presentation for the multi-site transfusion journal club via conference call organized by Dr. Nambiar.
- Participate in training of clinical services in transfusion medicine, consisting of a didactic lecture to trainees in surgery, medicine, pediatrics, or anesthesia.
- Present at quarterly Transfusion Medicine Committee at least once when requested.
- Develop at least one project to work on for a potential presentation at a national meeting and/or a publication.
Required Meetings
- Weekly CP call conference (Fridays at 9 AM) during which on-call clinical pathology and Transfusion Service issues will be presented.
- Monthly multi-site transfusion journal club via conference call organized by Dr. Nambiar and Dr. Marrero-Rivera (last Thursday, 3:30-4:30pm).
- Every other month TS Senior Supervisor and MD meetings organized by Elizabet Lomeli (3rd Thursday at 1-2pm).
- Quarterly Transfusion Service Quality Assurance (TSQA) meetings organized by Amy DeCourten (2nd Thursday at 3-4pm).
- Quarterly UCSF Transfusion Committee Meeting (last Monday of the month at 3-4:30pm).
