STRUCTURE:
This training is integrated within the six-month Transfusion Service rotation. The fellow will attend designated meetings and conferences related to quality and laboratory management as indicated by the rotation director.
DURATION: Two weeks

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:
- Understand the structure and operation of blood and tissue banks.
- Recognize regulatory requirements of the FDA, AABB and The Joint Commission (TJC) for blood and tissue banks.
- Define quality systems and quality indicators in transfusion service.
- Review blood product deviations (BPD), including BPD reportable to FDA, and incident reports related to blood products.
- Understand the mechanisms to investigate and report adverse events and procedures for handling blood product and tissue recalls and withdrawals.
- Understand the processes involved in obtaining tissue grafts including supplier qualification, traceability and record keeping, and storage of transplantable tissue.
- Participate in a quality improvement project.
