STRUCTURE:

This training is integrated within the six-month Transfusion Service rotation. The fellow will attend designated meetings and conferences related to quality and laboratory management as indicated by the rotation director.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:

  1. Understand the structure and operation of blood and tissue banks.
  2. Recognize regulatory requirements of the FDA, AABB and The Joint Commission (TJC) for blood and tissue banks.
  3. Define quality systems and quality indicators in transfusion service.
  4. Review blood product deviations (BPD), including BPD reportable to FDA, and incident reports related to blood products.
  5. Understand the mechanisms to investigate and report adverse events and procedures for handling blood product and tissue recalls and withdrawals.
  6. Understand the processes involved in obtaining tissue grafts including supplier qualification, traceability and record keeping, and storage of transplantable tissue.
  7. Participate in a quality improvement project.
